Life and art

Irina Tokmakova (1929-2018) is a writer and poetess who devoted her entire life to writing for and about children. A native Muscovite, she wrote poetry from her early youth, but never considered them significant or talented. Work in the genre of literary translation opened the door behind which the poetess found her true calling: to create amazing children's literature. In joint work with her husband, an illustrator, Irina Tokmakova gave young readers many collections of poems, plays, and fairy tales. In addition, children and their parents are delighted by the brilliant translations of the best examples of children's Swedish, English, and Dutch literature, including the well-known stories about Winnie the Pooh, Alice, Peter Pan, the Moomins, Niels and many others. For her invaluable contribution to children's literature and her inexhaustible love for creativity, Irina Tokmakova was repeatedly awarded prestigious state prizes.

Biography of children's writer Irina Tokmakova :

Irina Petrovna Tokmakova was born in Moscow on March 3, 1929. Father - Pyotr Karpovich Manukov (Perch Karapetovich Manukyan) (1901-1971), Armenian, electrical engineer, mother - Lydia Aleksandrovna Diligenskaya (1905-1985), Russian, from a family of clergy, children's doctor, was in charge of the Foundling House.

It is precisely because she grew up in an orphanage that Irina Tokmakova explains her desire to write children's literature. The writer's first prose is about this period of her life.

She always liked literature, at school she easily wrote essays and composed poetry. One day Irina asked her classmate, the daughter of Lebedev-Kumach, to show her poems to her father. Having received a review from him, pointing out the shortcomings, he advised her how she should write poetry. The girl tried to follow his recommendations, but she couldn’t write in a style that was not familiar to her and she gave up poetry for a long time.

During the evacuation, Tokmakova became interested in foreign languages and, after graduating from school with a gold medal, she entered Moscow State University without exams.

After the birth of her son, she worked as a guide and translator. One day I got into a conversation with a famous Swede - an energy specialist, who, having returned to Stockholm, sent her a volume of poems and a book of children's folk songs.

She translated this book for her son. Irina’s husband, the famous illustrator Lev Tokmakov, drew illustrations for them and insisted that the book be taken to the publishing house. The publishing house accepted the book and asked for more translation.

Irina translated from Swedish and Scottish, and wrote herself. Simple, easy and kind rhymes spread throughout kindergartens and primary schools.

The most famous works of Tokmakova in prose. The stories “Alya, Klyaksich and the letter A” and “Maybe zero is not to blame” - these books easily and naturally stimulate children’s interest in mathematics and grammar.

For her contribution to children's literature, Irina Tokmakova was awarded the Alexander Green State Prize. In recent years, the writer has worked hard and re-translated the book “Mio, my Mio.” The writer passed away on April 5, 2020.

Poems by Tokmakova: about what and for whom

The basis of the writer’s work is children’s folklore. Motifs of English-language and native folk poetry permeate Irina Tokmakova’s poems, captivating with rhythm and intonation richness. Despite the fact that during her life the writer created many large works, her favorite genre has always been miniature nursery rhymes. In just a few lines, the author puts a complete thought, a bright picture that even a child can understand. Repetitions and onomatopoeia, dynamic roll-calls of words from line to line - Tokmakova draws all these techniques from games, songs, teasers and counting rhymes. She constructs poems using children's vocabulary and logic, which invariably brings a smile even to an adult.

Another important feature of the writer’s work is the growth and development of her works together with the reader. Parents and teachers can use this to gradually increase the volume of verse that the child is able to perceive, complicate the imagery, and enhance the educational moment. Nursery rhymes, small at first, acquire repetitions, then additions, gradually turning into real literary works.

Tokmakova’s poems teach children to admire nature, talk to her and hear her stories. The images are extremely simple, but at the same time stimulate the imagination of the little reader: trees cry, rejoice and talk, a country house turns into a ship in the middle of a stormy sea, snowflakes dance, and sheep clouds peacefully nibble the grass. The writer very subtly feels the colors of a fairy-tale children's world, in which there is no place for boredom and monotony. In her poems, Irina Tokmakova seems to be speaking to her little reader in a completely adult way, but at the same time in a language he understands.

The main character of the poems is an honest child, capable of strong emotions, empathy, love and even hatred. The writer shows the little reader that protest and rebellion - if they are fair - have a place, that adults are not always right, that conflicts and painful situations are inevitable, but you can always find a way out of them.

Poems, fairy tales for children, about childhood, about children.
Irina Tokmakova

“...a child’s soul can hear the sounds of others

worlds unfamiliar to us, their poetry, their harmony"

Irina Tokmakova always treated children with respect; she recognized certain advantages for children in relation to certain mental and intellectual capabilities. Perhaps that is why she entered children's poetry very easily and naturally. Recognizing the freedom-loving nature of children, Tokmakova never tried to remake or retrain them in her poems. Perhaps the main word that she always put above all else is freedom. Freedom from meaningless moralizing, freedom of creativity and self-expression. In her poems for children, Tokmakova always used some folklore motifs. In general, she was very sensitive to folk art. Her work includes many children's poems based on Russian folklore images. Her favorite genre is nursery rhyme poetry. Children's favorite emotions are genuine joy and rebellion against injustice. Tokmakova always took writing children's poems seriously. She seemed to be trying to prove that children's poetry is not a joke at all. Very often in her works she used a roll call of sounds. For example, in the line “Summer rain found puddles,” the often repeated sound “l” imitates the sound of pouring water. This is an excellent training not only for the baby’s imagination, but also for his sound perception. In Tokmakova's children's poems, all the characters are animated, they all have their own character. And this is in tune with child psychology, when kids tend to transfer human qualities to any objects. Tokmakova’s “Trees” cycle is noteworthy in this regard, where each tree is associated with one or another child: a willow always cries, an aspen tree freezes even in the sun, a birch tree needs to be braided, one can only envy the strong strength of an oak tree, etc. Irina Tokmakova perfectly knows how to convey children's intonations and instantly senses the slightest changes in the baby's mood. Her lyrical hero is a child with a keen sense of beauty, who at the same time has his own opinion and is able to defend it if necessary. He knows not only the feeling of boundless love, but also all-consuming hatred. I hate Tarasov, Let him go home! In her poems for children, Tokmakova puts not only positive, but also negative emotions. Her characters may be in pain, they may protest, they may be stubborn. Some poems are written in such childish language that it seems as if they were written not by an adult aunt, but by some toddler. Tokmakova uses speech structures, phrases and sayings characteristic of children. Tokmakova herself believes in miracles, and conveys this belief to her little readers. She sees this miracle in what is very close, in every object that surrounds us. In her children's poems, the road to miracle runs through the land of “imagination.” And although the poetess prefers to use miniature poems, at the same time as her readers grow up, the volume of poems increases.

Poems by Tokmakova for children of 2nd grade

The poems by Irina Tokmakova “Plim” and “In a Wonderful Land” are most often chosen as program reading in the second grade. The first of them is about a funny made-up word “plym”, which “jumps and prances” in a completely ordinary world where there are cats, spoons and other ordinary objects. The work teaches children not to hamper their imagination, since it is this that is capable of creating joy around us. The poem “In a Wonderful Land” is on a very similar topic. In it, thanks to a play on words, things familiar to everyone suddenly behave like a fairy tale: a shoe laps up milk with its tongue, a chair dances on its legs. The author teaches the little reader to see miracles.

Oh my little feet! Oh you little legs! Why aren't you walking along the path?

Oh, you little hands, you hung like whips. Why not suitable for work?

You, little head, are always wild and cheerful, Are you hanging your nose in melancholy and sadness?

Ali, you don’t want to go to school, You unfortunate ones, Where the terrible teachers are fierce, Loading the falcon tightly? Be patient a little longer.

You have two days left to suffer. Summer is coming - Well, who studies in the summer?

3

If the lesson ends - Beauty, not a bell! For class - on the contrary - Such a freak is rattling...

4

“Change, change!” - The call is ringing. Vova is certainly the first to fly out of the threshold. Flies out of the threshold - knocks seven people off their feet.

Is it really Vova, who dozed off throughout the lesson? Couldn’t this Vova say a word at the blackboard five minutes ago?

If he is, then undoubtedly there will be a greater change with him! You can't keep up with Vova! Look how bad he is! In five minutes he managed to redo a bunch of things:

He tripped up three (Vaska, Kolka and Seryozhka), rolled somersaults, sat astride the railing, dashingly plopped off the railing, received a slap on the head,

He immediately gave someone back, asked them to write off the tasks, - In a word, he did everything he could! Well, here the bell rings again... Vova trudges into class again. Poor! There is no face on it!

“It’s okay,” Vova sighs, “We’ll relax in class!”

Ships come into the port of Fel - Like a steamship, Album steers,

Notebooks lined up in a row - Notebooks-boats are rushing to the port.

- Hurry to the port! To the port "Fel!" Here! Brave ships are sailing -

Sharpener, Eraser, Pencil (He took the Album on board!)

Behind them - a Handle and... Pie - Pie Pie swam up and lay down...

The port "Fel" was delivered in an hour to the port "School" by the navigator - Boy Stas.

I wrote cheat sheets all night! Didn't sleep, exhausted, tired. Now I’m standing, pulling the ticket - Will I be happy or not?

And now, the ticket is already in your hands, It’s white in your eyes, like in the clouds... - Hurray! I wrote all night for good reason! “Napoleon,” I read.

It's in my cheat sheet! I wish I could read it now. I hide like a cockroach and reach into my right pocket.

I'm reading: "Crimean War". I don't need this topic! And quietly, like a cockroach, I reach into my left pocket.

I look: “The Baptism of Rus'.” Have mercy, Lord! Well, how can I pass the exam?! And I started looking for a cheat sheet!

Father and mother don’t want Lyoshenka to get an animal. In vain he stamped his feet and watered the floor with his tears.

Well, what was wrong with what Lyokha told them? Who will understand them, their parents! Is it bad to have a pet? After all, a good animal is a hippopotamus.

These terrible sweet tooths Licked all the carriages, And then they couldn’t resist, They ate the locomotive with the chimney And of course, halfway they had to walk.

The hedgehog asked the mushroom under the aspen tree: “Tell me, why do you look like an umbrella?”

And the mushroom laughed: “That’s a strange question!” After all, I grew up in rainy weather!

I can ride my dad Day and night. It's bad that dad has nothing to grab onto.

If you grab him from behind, he shouts: “You can’t see!” - And it hurts for the hair, And it hurts for the ears!

What's the first thing a cat learns? - Grab it! What is the first thing a bird learns? - Fly! What is the first thing a schoolchild will learn?

The kitten will grow up to be a cat, just like everyone else in the world. The chick will turn into a bird, just like everything else in the world. And children read, And children dream, And even their mothers and fathers do not know Who the children will become, who they will grow up to be.

There are many different schools in the world. It's a pity that among these schools there is no such school yet. This is where I would go!

The animals there will teach people all their skills. And there will be no better school. What's there? Let's see together.

The cat-teacher will teach us to live carefree in the world: to think everything through better and not to rush.
