Materials for geography lessons “Geographical features of the world, through the eyes of great artists”
Very often in my geography lessons I turn to the paintings of great Russian artists, and this makes the lesson exciting and interesting. Describing pictures of nature allows students to deepen their knowledge of geography and makes them want to express their thoughts in a bright and exciting form.
Works of Russian landscape painting convey to us images of natural phenomena and objects, thereby allowing us to study these objects and phenomena.
Reproductions of paintings can be used at different stages of the lesson and for different purposes:
- before explaining the topic, as a means of forming initial ideas;
- to create problematic situations;
- after explaining the relevant issue or topic and serves as an illustration;
- in the course of explaining the topic, as a means of forming geographical concepts.
I have created several filmstrips with paintings by Russian artists to study such topics as “Lithosphere - the rocky shell of the Earth”, “World Ocean”, “Atmosphere - the airy shell of the Earth”.
When getting acquainted with the topic “Lithosphere - the rocky shell of the Earth,” students become familiar with the structure of the earth’s crust, the causes of the processes that occur on the surface of the Earth, and changes in its appearance. The relief of our planet is very diverse, and in order to better understand its individual forms, students are helped by paintings by artists: Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi, Alexei Savrasov.

It is very interesting to study the geographical topic “World Ocean”. The paintings of I.K. are educational. Aivazovsky “The Ninth Wave”, “Sea”, “Calm”, “Ocean”, “Among the Waves”, “The Flood” The artist went down in art history as a great marine painter - a master of depicting the sea.

“The atmosphere is the air shell of the Earth”, while studying this topic I turn to the works of great Russian artists. In their paintings you can see images of all atmospheric phenomena: thunderstorms, blizzards, fog, dust storms, strong winds, rain, clouds and others. Artists in their creations show how changeable nature is; they convey their attitude to these phenomena, for example, paintings by A.M. Vasnetsov “Visit. Blizzard. Old Moscow”, “Gloomy Day”, “Clouds”, paintings by I.L. Levitan “Before the Storm”, “Gloomy Day”, “Rainy Evening”.

Artistic works are not only valuable as works of art, they are important as a historical archive of geographic INFORMATION.
Artistic landscapes are the basis of visual impressions. Using them in geography lessons allows the teacher to direct his efforts from the formation of knowledge, abilities, skills to the development of the student’s personality, his creative capabilities, along with the development of logical thinking, to form artistic and imaginative thinking, to develop aesthetic taste, the ability to perceive and understand beauty.
The materials can be used not only in geography lessons, but also in fine arts lessons.
I wish you success!
