Easter is the main holiday of Christians around the world. This is the day when Jesus Christ was resurrected, and this event is the basis of Christianity. Easter as the Resurrection of the Savior has been celebrated for about 2000 years, but this day was celebrated long before this event.

For many years the people of Israel were held captive in Egypt. And the moment came when God decided to lead the Jews out of this country. Since Pharaoh did not want to let the people go, one night an Angel descended onto Egyptian soil and struck with death all the firstborn in every house. And only the Israelites were not affected by this; the Angel passed by their homes. It was this event that received the name Passover, which translated from the ancient Hebrew language means “passed by, passed by.” All these events occurred approximately 2000 years before the birth of Christ, and all these years the Passover holiday was celebrated in Israel.

The resurrection of Christ happened precisely on Easter day, and from then on the holiday itself took on a completely different meaning. On this day, Christians remember the events associated with the death and Resurrection of the Savior, glorify the Lord both for his sacrifice and for the salvation of all mankind.

It is known that the Jewish people have not accepted Christ as Savior until now. For them, Easter remained a holiday of deliverance from Egyptian captivity.

Christians all over the world celebrate Easter as their main holiday. After all, the Resurrection of Christ means that a person’s life is not limited to his earthly existence, that another life will follow - eternal, happy, next to his Savior. Christ died by sacrificing himself, but then He rose again, and the same will happen to all his followers.

Easter is a universal holiday, celebrated by both believers and all other people. For many centuries there has been a tradition of baking Easter cakes and coloring eggs for this day.

Interestingly, this holiday does not have a specific date; every year it is celebrated on its own day, which is calculated in a special way. The first full moon and the first Sunday after it are counted from the vernal equinox and become the day of Easter celebration. It is for this reason that the date of the Resurrection of Christ changes every year.

Report on the topic Easter

Both Christmas and Easter are wonderful holidays. At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and at Easter we celebrate his resurrection. A week before Easter we celebrate the day of Lazarus. The resurrection of Lazarus is one of the greatest biblical miracles. Take a deceased person and bring him back to life - this work is achievable only by the power of God.

How terrible it sounds - Good Friday! The heart is always filled with grief when we imagine it: weak, tired, crucified, with bright marks and running streams of blood on a noble face. And his eyes! It seems that they have collected all the pain of humanity! And all the forgiveness of his great heart! How many of his followers wondered when they discovered the tomb was empty? Perhaps they then realized that miracles are only possible if you believe?

For Christians, Easter is a sacred day and a great holiday. This is the day of faith; on a day that makes you look at yourself and ask yourself: “Am I living well? And it might not be necessary to do better? This holiday is a unifying holiday for many people and allows them not only to become imbued with religion, but also to improve their own morality, even if the person is not religious.

Families celebrate solemnly. On Maundy Thursday, eggs are painted. There's always red. This is a symbol of the blood of Jesus. As the legend says, such an egg originally appeared when one of the first preachers of Christ gave the emperor, before whom she preached, an egg and it turned red. After this, the ruler believed in Christianity and softened in his own heart. On Sunday evenings they go to church, where the Mass for the Resurrection of Christ is heard. At exactly midnight, the priest congratulates those present on the Resurrection of Christ. With pure souls and happily illuminated faces, people leave the temple of God. With a small flickering candle flame, everyone takes a miracle into their home. On Sunday every family gathers.

The great 49 days of fasting have ended, so different dishes are also present on the table. The children are very happy. They rattle beautifully decorated eggs. In addition, there are traditional Easter cakes on the table, which are an ancient symbol. As they say, this symbol dates back to paganism, but Christianity transformed the symbol of Easter cake and eggs in accordance with its own teachings. Easter is a wonderful holiday that makes people part of a great Christian family.

Bright holiday Easter

Easter is celebrated on Bright Sunday following the spring equinox and full moon. This is the holiday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, which gives people faith in eternal life, faith in the victory of good over evil, light over darkness. This is a very beautiful and good holiday.

The celebration of Easter lasts forty days - exactly as long as Christ appeared to his disciples after the Resurrection. During the forty days of Easter, and especially in the first week, they go to visit each other, give colored eggs and Easter cakes, and play Easter games.

In Rus', in all cities and villages, several thousand barrels and cauldrons with boiled eggs, painted in different colors, were placed. Some of them are gilded and silver plated. Passers-by bought them. When they met, they greeted each other and said: “Christ is Risen!”, gave each other eggs, and kissed.

Traditions

The Feast of Bright Resurrection is preceded by Lent. He prepares us for the last week before Easter. During this week, day after day, the Church helps us relive the great events that occurred in the last days of Jesus' earthly life.

Usually during Lent there is the feast of the Annunciation (March 25, and according to the new calendar - April 7). On this day, the Angel of God appeared to the Virgin Mary and told her that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, would be born to her. The Annunciation is a quiet, joyful holiday, and it has always been especially loved in Russia.

And a week before Easter there is another holiday - Palm Sunday. It is especially interesting for children, because it was children who took a great part in the event that we remember on this day.

The Gospel tells how, a few days before the great holiday, Jesus Christ said to His disciples: “Let us go to Jerusalem.” When they approached Jerusalem, at the request of Jesus Christ, two disciples brought him a young donkey, put their clothes on the colt, and Jesus sat on it. The city was full of people on the occasion of the holiday. People who had heard a lot about Christ, about how He healed the sick, even raised the dead (made them alive), rushed to Him. Some cut branches from trees and spread them on the road before Him, others laid out their clothes like a carpet so that He could pass over them. Everyone around joyfully exclaimed: “Hosanna!” (salvation) - how we now shout “Hurray!” Small children exclaimed especially loudly and continued to rejoice in the temple, seeing the miracles of Jesus Christ (He healed the blind and lame who surrounded Him in the temple).

The priests and learned men who were there told Jesus Christ to tell the children to be quiet. But Jesus Christ answered: “Have you never read: from the mouths of babes and sucklings You have created praise, and that if they remain silent, the stones will cry out?”

The last week before Easter is called Holy Week (week), because during these days we remember how Jesus Christ suffered and gave his life for us. Every day of Holy Week there are services in the church that do not happen at other times of the year.

Based on the greatness (importance) of the remembered events, all days of Holy Week are called Great. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are dedicated to remembering the last conversations of the Lord Jesus Christ with the people and disciples.

On Thursday morning during Holy Week, during the Liturgy, they remember the Last Supper - the last meal of Jesus Christ with His disciples, when He gave them communion. This is how Holy Communion was established.

On Maundy Thursday, which in popular traditions is called “pure”, every Orthodox person strives to cleanse himself spiritually, take communion, and receive the sacrament. Among the people, this day was celebrated by the custom of cleansing with water - swimming in an ice hole, river, lake.

On Maundy Thursday evening, everyone in the church stands with lit candles in their hands and listens to the reading of twelve passages from the Gospel about how Jesus Christ suffered and died on the cross. We have preserved the custom of trying to bring home the light with which we stood in the church, light the lamp in front of the icon with this light and keep it burning until Easter.

And on Good Friday there is no Liturgy (mass). In the afternoon (at the third hour) the shroud is brought to the middle of the temple - a large icon depicting Jesus Christ when He was taken down from the cross. They try to decorate this icon with flowers as best as possible. In church they come up to her, bow to the ground, kiss her, “kiss her.”

During Lent, all kinds of games and amusements were prohibited, and with Easter, fun activities for young people began. The celebrations were held outdoors. On all days of Holy Week, swings, carousels, booths are arranged for the common people, where comedians give their performances. Everywhere they dance, sing, and dance in circles.

There would be no Easter without a swing. In almost every yard there was a swing for children, and in a traditional place, poles were dug in ahead of time, ropes were hung, boards were attached - a public swing was erected. Absolutely everyone rides on the swings. Near them, something like a village club is formed: girls with sunflowers, women with children, men and boys with harmonicas and “talyankas” crowd here from morning to night.

Many spring games and fun in Rus' were associated with holidays. So from Easter they began to swing on the swings, festivities began with funny games, round dances, play round dances, and round dance songs. One of the widespread and favorite Easter entertainments was the rolling of painted eggs (boiled colored eggs). For this purpose, special trays with a groove were made. The players sat opposite each other at a certain distance and, on command, rolled the eggs into trays. If a rolled egg hit another player’s egg and broke it, then the player took the broken egg for himself. These games can still be played today.

On Easter evenings, girls dropped a raw egg into boiling water - three drops each. The resulting figurines foreshadowed a woman’s destiny, whether the marriage would be successful, whether the house would be rich, whether the children would be good.

The girls carefully examined the cross-section of the Easter egg: the closer the yolk is to the edge of the white, the closer the marriage; the brighter the yolk, the more successful the marriage.

Don’t forget to celebrate Christ three times with all your family and friends on the day of the Holy Resurrection of Christ! At the same time, people kiss, forgiving each other all insults, misunderstandings, and maybe even anger. How could it be otherwise, because today is a bright, joyful day of Resurrection!

Easter eggs

Why eggs?

Version #1: Probably because in the egg hiding the life of the chick, our ancestors could see a visual image of the Life-Giving Tomb and the Resurrection of Christ.

Version #2: On the other hand, the Resurrection egg in its color resembles the priceless blood of Christ, which brings us eternal salvation.

Version #3: There is a third explanation: long ago, the egg was a sign of the spring rebirth of the sun, and many believed that the world originated from the egg. Hatched like a chicken!

Version #4: In Christianity, the egg acquired a new meaning. The custom of dyeing eggs is associated with Mary Magdalene, who, having learned about the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, came to Emperor Tiberius and gave him an egg with the exclamation “Christ is Risen!” The emperor doubted this: “This is as difficult to believe as the fact that this white egg can turn red!” And at the same moment the white egg turned scarlet. The red egg is a symbol of the Resurrection, a symbol of Easter. Just as new life arises from an egg, so the world was born again through the Resurrection of Christ. The red color signifies the joy of the Resurrection, the rebirth of the human race, but it is also the color of the Blood of Christ shed on the cross, which redeemed the sins of the world.

How to paint eggs?

Onion peeling is the most famous and accessible method to everyone. Eggs can be colored from yellow to red-brown. The color depends on the concentration of the decoction. Wash the eggs. Prepare a decoction of onion peels and let it brew. If you want the color to be more saturated, you need to take more husks and cook them for about half an hour before adding the eggs to the broth.

How to paint eggs?

In the old days, eggs were not only painted (krashenki), but also painted with wax (pysanky). Today, any woman has a wide variety of means of decorating eggs and making original decorations for the holiday from them.

Easter in different countries

In most European countries, Holy Week and the week after Easter are school and student holidays. Many European countries, as well as Australia, celebrate Easter and Easter Monday as public holidays. In Australia, the UK, Germany, Canada, Latvia, Portugal, Croatia and most Latin American countries, Good Friday is also a public holiday. The entire Easter Triduum is a public holiday in Spain.
