In the garden or in the forest, in the vegetable garden, in the field or in the meadow you can always meet

ladybugs flying during the hottest hours of the day.

The scarlet half of a pea, crawling on six black legs, is called affectionately everywhere. In our country, it is called a ladybug or a sun, in Western Europe - a lady's lamb, a sun calf, a sun bug.

Both adult ladybugs and their larvae feed on aphids; Some ladybugs and their larvae feed on plants.

Their gluttony makes predatory beetles faithful assistants to humans in the fight against aphids and other harmful insects. One beetle destroys 50-100 aphids per day.

In spring, ladybugs lay bright yellow eggs on the leaves (20-50 eggs per day).

Larvae soon emerge from the eggs. They spend their entire lives among aphids. Each larva before pupation (30-40 days) destroys up to 1000 aphids. Ladybug larvae are often brightly colored and covered in warts and spines. Before pupation, the larva attaches to the underside of leaves with the posterior end of the body and develops into hanging pupae. After 7-10 days, a new generation of bugs emerge from the pupae.

There are more than 4,000 known species of ladybugs, which are distributed in all parts of the world.

The most common species is the seven-spotted ladybug. It has 7 - 8 mm. length. Its chest shield is black with a whitish spot in the front corner; red elytra with 7 black dots. Very common in Europe, North Africa and Asia.

Cows are poisonous and have almost no enemies. Thanks to its bright “clothing”, the ladybug is visible from afar. The sharp color warns: Don't touch me! I’m not good enough for you to eat!”

A rare bird tries to taste this beetle. If this happens, she cleans her beak for a long time, shaking her head, as if reproaching herself: “And I had to peck such a nasty thing!” The cow secretes a special yellowish liquid, unpleasant in smell and taste, which repels the enemy.

I am a spotted insect, if I get my hands on it, I will pretend to be seriously ill, I will faint. An important adaptation for protection is the ability to “play dead.” In case of danger, the beetle presses its legs and antennae to its body and... falls to the ground. When the danger has passed, the bug “comes to life.”

Ladybugs overwinter in the forest floor, under clods of soil, under the bark of trees, under roots and in other shelters.

Interesting fact: Cows sometimes gather for get-togethers. The famous French entomologist J. Fabre looked in amazement at the chapel covered with red ladybugs. On a warm June day on the shore of Lake Baikal, biologist O. Gusev encountered a many-kilometer-long narrow living ribbon. According to his calculations, there were 600,000 ladybugs on every kilometer of shore.

Children's fortune-telling sign: “Ladybug, bucket or bad weather?” If the cow, having listened to the guys enough, flies away, this supposedly promises good weather, if it crawls, bad weather will set in, and when the beetle does not express a desire to fly or crawl, then the weather does not seem to change.

Do you know?

  • “Ladybug, fly to heaven” - children hum this simple song when a scarlet bug slowly minces along the child’s palm. Finally, the cow allows itself to be persuaded - it raises its varnished elytra, releases thin transparent wings and goes about its business.
  • If the cow flies away, it means she believed it.

Occasionally, ladybugs behave completely badly, they actually go wild. It used to be that on fine days on the beach near Sevastopol, clouds of insects would plop onto people and try to bite them more painfully. People, as if from stinging bees, fled into the water. Ladybugs sandwich recipe

Ingredients: sliced loaf, butter, tomatoes, pitted olives, parsley leaves. Preparation: cut the loaf into thin slices, each of which is also cut in half. Brush all halves of the slices with butter and garnish with parsley leaves. Cut the tomatoes in half, cut each half crosswise in the form of wings. Make a ladybug head from half an olive. Make black spots for the wings from small pieces of olives, insert them into the wings, piercing small holes with a knife. Place the tomatoes on the loaf slices, and also decorate the sides with parsley. Very tasty and unusual!

Where do ladybugs live?

Ladybugs live almost all over the world except northern latitudes. Their life cycle depends on the availability of food. The active stage occurs during the extermination of aphids, the main diet of these insects, i.e. from spring to autumn. They live from a couple of months to one year, and occasionally last up to two.

A solitary lifestyle is acceptable to them; they settle in groups for wintering or for mating. They feel comfortable in open areas with grassy vegetation on:

In search of food, they crawl through plants, periodically flying over long distances. They do this easily and silently. But as long as an individual lives, it always wakes up early and works all day, destroying pests. It is thermophilic, the optimal temperature for it is +10 C, during other periods it spends the winter.

Bright warning coloration of a ladybug

The ladybug is endowed with bright colors, which help in the struggle for existence and strike fear into enemies, most often birds. This is one example of mimicry, like the green color of grasshoppers or the ability of a chameleon to blend into its environment for the purpose of self-preservation.

The striking colors of the natural wild world serve as warning signals about the toxicity and inedibility of the observed prey. There is a theory that the brighter the color of the beetle, the less likely it is to be attacked by enemies. The expressive color of various types of ladybug indicates mortal danger. As individuals age, it fades.
