And so, before setting ourselves tasks and collecting information from scientific literature, we compiled questionnaire forms with questions to find out the opinions of classmates on a topic that interests us. 17 people took part in the survey, including 6 boys and 11 girls. We presented the results of the survey in the table.

When we asked our first question, “Do you like to chew gum?”, we thought that we would get a 100% positive answer, but it turned out that not everyone loves chewing gum.

Our classmates like chewing gum because of the variety of tastes and because it is sweet.

To the question “How often do you use chewing gum?”, most of the guys answered “when you want,” and this is very harmful to the stomach. Chewing gum taken into the mouth causes the production of gastric juice - the juice is produced, but there is nothing for it to digest. The stomach begins to digest its own mucous membrane. The result is gastritis, followed by an ulcer. This means that the guys don’t know that you can chew gum only after eating.

Also, not all classmates know about the culture of behavior when chewing sweet gum. Half of the children answered that they could chew it on the street.

Because children endlessly chew gum, this turns into a bad, and in some cases, harmful habit for the reason that they constantly pull the gum out of their mouths, then start chewing again or, which is generally not acceptable, give each other a try. The result is stomatitis of varying severity.

The most commonly used chewing gums were “Dirol” and “Orbit”. But many guys in our class prefer different chewing gums.

The answers to questions about the benefits and harms of chewing gum were much worse. Most students could not name a single positive property of chewing gum, and answered the question “none.” The children also do not have much knowledge about the negative consequences of using chewing gum. Mostly only dental disease was mentioned

Despite the fact that the number of publications devoted to various aspects of the influence of chewing gum on the body already exceeds 2 thousand, the discussion about their harm and benefits continues. So we decided to look into this issue and find out the opinions of experts and ordinary people. We went on an excursion to a pharmacy, a store, and a hospital. We talked with parents at home, a paramedic in the hospital, customers and a salesperson in a store.

The pharmacy told us that they sell chewing gum, which strengthens teeth and gums, cleanses the oral cavity, provides fresh breath, and has an antiseptic and general strengthening effect. Both adults and children take them.

The store has different types of chewing gum, which are divided into two groups: for children “Hubba Bubba”, children’s “Orbit”; for adults “Orbit”, “Eclipse”, “Eclipse Karma”, “Dirol”. But children often buy chewing gum for adults. One store sells about 300 packs of chewing gum per month.

We asked: what is the difference between chewing gum for adults and chewing gum for children?

The sellers told us that chewing gum for adults is different from chewing gum for children. In our country there is practically no “adult” chewing gum with sugar. But there is a lot of “children’s” chewing gum that contains sugar. Oddly enough, but it is the children's varieties that are dangerous to health. And this danger can be felt by taste - harmful chewing gum is harder and quickly loses its taste, beginning to taste bitter. Children's chewing gum is also brighter.

When talking with customers, we asked questions and received the following answers:

And here is the opinion of medical experts about the effect of using chewing gum on the human body.

Chewing gum is produced by the food industry as a means to cleanse and refresh the oral cavity, as well as stimulate salivation. In the process of chewing, the chewing muscles are trained and blood circulation in the gums increases. Sweeteners contained in chewing gum (sorbitol, xylitol) restore the acid-base balance. Recently, chewing gums, which contain sweeteners, fluorides and other substances that have an anti-caries effect, have found widespread use. Proper use of these chewing gums is beneficial due to the preventative effects of the said supplements.

Of course, this remedy also has its negative sides. Thus, overuse of chewing gum can lead to an increase in chewing load and a negative effect on the teeth. This is unacceptable for periodontal diseases, dentition defects, and tooth mobility. We dentists do not recommend consuming chewing gum that contains sugar, which contributes to the development of caries. Constant chewing sometimes causes disease of the temporomandibular joint and causes increased dryness of the mucous membrane.

Constantly chewing on one side of the mouth can lead to facial asymmetry due to the enlargement of the masticatory muscles on only one side.

No chewing gum can replace a thorough brushing of teeth with toothpaste, since it is not able to completely remove plaque because it is too tenacious for it, and it cannot penetrate into hard-to-reach areas of the mouth.

If you already have tooth decay and a gum accidentally gets stuck in your teeth, this will only speed up tooth decay. Therefore, you must follow the rules of chewing tasty gum, and then it will not harm you.

It is important to recommend the use of chewing gum after meals. At this time, chewing gum promotes salivation, which increases our digestive activity, allowing us to digest everything we eat faster and easier. It is just important not to overdo it over time, since chewing on an empty stomach contributes to the development and exacerbation of gastritis and ulcers. The secreted gastric juice, in the absence of food, begins to “digest” the gastric mucosa. From the side of the salivary glands, dryness of the mucous membrane appears, oral digestion is disrupted, dysbacteriosis develops, and seizures occur. When chewing, you bite your lips and cheeks.

For taste, chewing gums also add various flavors, preservatives and sweeteners, many of which are harmful to the liver and kidneys and can also cause allergies. Many “anti-caries” chewing gums are saturated with fluoride - this can cause fragility of skeletal bones (calcium is washed out of the bone and a person risks getting a fracture at the slightest injury).

Sugar substitutes contained in chewing gum, such as xylitol and sorbitol, have a laxative effect, which is what manufacturers warn about on the packaging.

Chewing gum should not be chewed by people suffering from gastritis, gastroduodenitis, stomach and duodenal ulcers, as well as cholecystitis and pathology of the salivary glands.

Strengthening the jaw joint and improving digestion can be done in other ways. The digestion of a growing organism, which has not yet been disrupted, does not require additional stimulation of salivation, and it is much more useful to strengthen the mandibular joint by eating carrots or apples.

Rather, chewing gum can seriously harm children: accidentally swallowing gum during play and getting stuck in the throat, esophagus or intestines will cause a lot of trouble.
Endless chewing turns into a bad, and in some cases, harmful habit for the simple reason that children constantly pull the gum out of their mouths, then start chewing again, or, which is generally unacceptable, give each other a try, bringing in a lot of germs from their dirty hands. Teacher

If a child's mouth is constantly busy with chewing gum, his speech, as a rule, is unclear and incomprehensible. Children do not pronounce sounds well in childhood, and, therefore, at an older age they may have problems in Russian lessons. The constant presence of chewing gum in the mouth increases the tone of the masticatory muscles, which causes teeth grinding and, as a result, poor sleep.

According to many psychologists, chewing gum can affect the development of thinking and memory. They believe that chewing gum only distracts the attention of schoolchildren and weakens the thinking process.

It is believed that chewing gum helps relieve stress.

Chewing gum often becomes addictive, just like coffee, cigarettes, and alcohol. Also, chewing gum is not appropriate in all situations. It is important to remember this, otherwise you may turn out to be an uncultured person.

In addition, chewing gum constantly, in the theater, at work, at school, while talking with people is simply indecent. We must always remember this and explain it to others, teaching them good manners. In general, chewing gum has many disadvantages.
In order to somehow protect yourself from the sad consequences of chewing gum, you should follow the basic rules for using chewing gum. Only people with healthy teeth and gums can use chewing gum.

We wondered why adults forbid us to buy chewing gum, what does it consist of, why is it harmful or useful?

We decided to conduct our research and find out:

What is chewing gum? When did she appear? Why do children love it and adults chew it? What effect does chewing gum have on the human body? Is chewing gum beneficial or harmful? Can you chew it always and everywhere? Is it ethical to chew socially?

My comrades and I had a desire to understand these issues ourselves. For two months we studied these issues: we went to the library, talked with parents, customers in the store, and a paramedic. We conducted a survey among classmates, class hour “Chewing gum - benefits or harm.” Based on the work done, we want to prove that chewing gum is a bad habit; it has a harmful effect on the body of children and adults. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of your health and use chewing gum only in extreme cases. Main question:
