Questions and tasks for discussion

Oceans occupy 71% of our planet's surface. It was there that the first living creatures on Earth appeared 3500 million years ago. Nowadays, the ocean is home to a wide variety of animals.

Some areas of the world's oceans differ from each other no less than tropical forests from deserts. Marine life is influenced by many factors, including currents, surface winds, light, water depth and temperature. On this map, the most life-rich areas of the world's oceans are marked in white.

In addition to fish, the sea is home to representatives of almost all types of animals.

How do fish breathe underwater?

Fish pass water through gills located behind their mouths.

Water comes inside

The gills are located under these "valves"

The gills produce oxygen from water, just as our lungs do with air.

Who lives in the sea?

In addition to fish, the sea is home to representatives of almost all types of animals. This page presents just a few of them.

Most fish, like this cod,

have a bony skeleton and shiny scales. Intertwined with each other, these scales form a flexible, streamlined cover.

Some fish, such as sharks, have soft, rubbery skeletons and sandpaper-hard scales. Such fish inhabited the seas even before the advent of dinosaurs.

Crustaceans, like the lobster, have a hard shell and legs. Crustaceans also include shrimp and crabs

Some reptiles like this sea turtle also live in the seas.

Mammals also live in the seas, such as sea lions,

seals and whales. They cannot breathe in water, but they can hold their breath for a long time under water.

Some birds, like this cormorant

, learned to dive to hunt for fish.

Why do whales jump out of the water?

Some whales occasionally jump out of the water, splashing back down with a deafening splash. Why they do this, no one really knows. There are several versions about this:

1.This is a way of communicating with other whales. The sound of a splash travels over long distances in water.

2. This gives the whale a larger field of view than from the surface of the ocean.

3.In this way, the whale shakes off small animals stuck to its skin.

What is plankton?

Plankton are any marine organisms that are carried by waves and currents from place to place, since they themselves cannot swim. Mostly these organisms.

Phytoplankton consists of tiny marine plants. They cannot exist without light, so they live in the upper layers of the ocean, penetrated by the sun's rays. Many marine animals feed on them.

Phytoplankton magnified thousands of times.

Zooplankton, magnified hundreds of times.

Why do deep-sea fish have such an unusual appearance?

It is very cold in the depths of the ocean, and eternal darkness reigns below 600 m from sea level. There is very little life here, and deep-sea fish have a hard time finding food.

More than half of all deep-sea animals can illuminate some part of their body. This light not only lures the victim, but also helps to attract the attention of an individual of the opposite sex in pitch darkness.

Glowing spots serve to lure prey.

Sharp, crooked teeth prevent the victim from breaking free.

The mouth of such a fish can open very wide due to the lowering of the lower jaw. This allows her to swallow large prey.

Did you know this?

Row of teeth on lower jaw | The shark is attached to a kind of conveyor belt. If she clings to something hard and loses her teeth, new ones will take their place.
