Origin and history
Since ancient times, the Eastern Slavs have used percussion instruments in warfare, hunting, rituals, shepherding, and as a musical instrument for rhythmic accompaniment of singing or dancing. The use of these instruments is similar to clapping and stamping, which has existed among all peoples of the world since ancient times.
The use of spoons as a musical instrument is not unique. It is known that at feasts, in the heat of dance excitement, not only spoons were used, but also frying pans, basins, stove valves, samovar pipes, pots, forks, in short, everything that could make a sound. Among household utensils, the scythe and saw acquired a stable musical function.
as a musical instrument in Russia The first fairly detailed information about them appears at the end of the 18th century and indicates their wide distribution among peasants. Some researchers suggest that Russians originated spoons in imitation of Spanish castanets.
The fact that the instrument existed long before the end of the 17th century. This is indirectly evidenced by popular prints dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. For example, spoons are depicted in the hands of hereditary buffoons Savoska and Paramoshka. Their instruments are equipped with bells. Under another picture depicting a goat and a bear there is an inscription: The bear and the goat are chilling, having fun with their music. The bear put up his hat and played the pipe, and the goat in a beautiful sundress - with horns, and bells, and with spoons, jumps and dances in a crouch.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, spoons were widely used in song choirs and ensembles of Russian folk instruments as a spectacular number with elements of trickery. Playing spoons reached a high level of skill in the last century; virtuoso spoon players have received very enthusiastic reviews in the literature. Spoonmen performed solo, accompanied singing and dancing, and were also part of various ensembles.
The extraordinary success of spoon makers attracted at the beginning of the twentieth century. into the composition of orchestras of Russian folk instruments, led to the fact that workshops for the production of musical instruments began to produce modernized metal spoons with bells and bells. Such spoons were used as small bells; they were held in the hand and shaken as needed. Spoons of this kind were used in regimental choirs.
Nowadays, spoons have legitimized their place not only in home ensembles and amateur orchestras, but also on the professional stage.
Spoon playing technique
No additional tools or equipment are required to play wooden spoons. This can be done both standing and sitting. Folk ensembles prefer to use special spoons made of maple or birch. Ordinary ones are most often made from linden wood, but it does not make such ringing sounds and is also more fragile.
The classical spoon musical instrument looks like two wooden structures held in the hand of one hand. The ringing sound is achieved by striking the back sides against each other.
The handles of the spoons should be held firmly, while the brush should be flexible and soft. The sound volume is regulated by the force of impact. At the beginning of classes, the hand may become significantly tired, but over time the muscles adapt to the specific load and get used to it. Experienced spoon players can play three spoons by holding them between the fingers of one hand. Playing spoons does not require studying musical notation or scores. Just a sense of rhythm and a desire to learn to play an instrument.

Spoons are often used as a musical instrument in kindergartens and development centers. First of all, they are safe for children: the smooth surfaces of the spoons will not allow children to get hurt, and the light weight and mobility of the musical instrument make it indispensable at any matinee. Kids enjoy making loud rhythmic sounds from spoons and working hard with their hands.
But using this folk instrument is useful not only for pleasure: while playing spoons, fine motor skills are actively involved and developed. This has a positive effect on the development of the speech apparatus, allowing you to correct handwriting and concentration. Playing with spoons as art therapy can be prescribed to hyperactive children and children with perception problems.
Listening to a group of folk instruments is a real pleasure. They are able to convey the mood and energy of an entire nation, convey its history. Nowadays, such music has become very popular. Taking part in playing an ensemble of folk instruments is as easy as shelling pears, even for a person without musical skills. Wooden spoons will immerse you in an atmosphere of daring fun and rhythmic jokes of buffoons.
