Research work “The snow is fluttering and spinning. Is it white outside?
- April 21, 2014
Conference “Project activity in an educational institution - 2014”
Nomination “Children’s project in elementary school”
Winter is the most magical and beautiful time of the year. Winter has only one color at its disposal - white - the color of snow. But how great winter uses it! One snowfall and everything looks different: festive, elegant, refreshed. But after a few hours, the feeling of a fairy tale disappears: the snow becomes gray, especially along the roads!
Why does snow in the city become dirty so quickly? Is it because of the cars?
Hypothesis : I assumed that the main source of snow pollution in the city is motor transport.
And I decided to conduct a study that could confirm or refute my hypothesis.
Purpose of the study : collecting evidence of the influence of road transport on snow cover pollution.
To achieve this goal, the following tasks were identified:
- To study the degree of snow cover contamination at different distances from the road.
- Based on experience, consider the impact of exhaust fumes on snow cover.
- Find out the composition of exhaust gases from cars running on gasoline.
Research methods were determined in accordance with the purpose, hypothesis and objectives of the work:
- Working with information sources (encyclopedias, reference books, Internet resources).
- Conducting research, observing, recording results.
Stages of work:
- Study of the degree of snow cover contamination (practical part)
- Impact of exhaust gases on snow cover (practical part)
- Studying the composition of vehicle exhaust gases
- The influence of melted snow masses on plant growth (practical part)
- Formulation of conclusions
In the course of the work done, after conducting experiments and observations, I was convinced that:
- The most contaminated samples are snow samples taken close to the road;
- The main reason for the dark color of snow on the roadsides and, accordingly, melt water is the removal of particles contained in vehicle exhaust gases;
Thus, my hypothesis that the main source of snow pollution is motor transport was confirmed.
Also, after conducting an experiment with seeds, I was convinced that melted snow masses, polluted by car exhaust gases, slow down the germination of seeds and the growth of seedlings. This indicates that exhaust gases are harmful to the environment! But this is a topic for a completely different study.

Introduction:
Motive:
I really like winter.
I love New Year holidays and winter fun. I like to skate, sled, and make a snowman. Winter in our region, although snowy, is unfortunately very frosty. There is rarely good weather for playing outside. Winter has passed, but I haven’t had enough of playing with snow. Marina Nikolaevna suggested making snow that would not melt in the heat, would feel warm to the touch and at the same time look like real snow. I wondered what and how we would get it from. And I agreed with joy and interest to receive snow that does not melt in the warmth. Relevance
: (from the supervisor) - I once faced a problem: how to make three-dimensional figures out of snow together with children in a group. Indeed, in our conditions, sticky snow is a rare phenomenon and it is very difficult to show the stickiness of snow as a property.
I tried to bring snow indoors: firstly, it melts quickly, and secondly, it is cold, the children can get sick.
“So, together with the children, we decided to try to make artificial snow that is warm and does not melt. And crafts made from it are stored well and keep their shape.
Relevance:
(from a young researcher) I didn’t know that there is snow that you can make yourself and play with it in a warm room without fear that it will melt.
Target
: learn how to make artificial snow and get it yourself.
Hypothesis:
Let's assume that artificial snow can be obtained under normal conditions using ordinary products that are available at home and in the store.
Research objectives:
— Find out how to make artificial snow,
— Find out what products are needed for this, — Find out where you can buy everything you need, — Try to make artificial snow yourself.
Research methods:
— to think that I know about artificial snow,
- ask adults how to get it,
- get information from the Internet about artificial snow and how to get it, - get artificial snow in different ways,
- games with artificial snow.
Object of study
: artificial snow
Subject of research
: obtaining artificial snow. Use it in games, as well as as a decoration for New Year's crafts.
2. Main part:
2.1
.
What is artificial snow?
I thought for myself and asked the adults
Mom found information about artificial snow on the Internet and in a book, simple experiments for preschoolers. And what do I know now about artificial snow?
Nastya
. Artificial snow is a white, loose mass that looks like real snow. It is warm and does not melt. It is easy to sculpt snowballs and different shapes from such snow. It can be stored in a bag for a long time and will not lose its properties. It is used both in games and for decorating rooms. Such snow is not dangerous to health.
Conclusion:
Having learned from adults that artificial snow exists and can be obtained in different ways, I became even more interested and I wanted to get it myself.
2.2
How to get it? On the Internet and in books
we have found many ways to obtain such snow.
— From various sources, we learned that there are many ways to obtain artificial snow. We chose the three simplest methods. The products there are ordinary and not expensive. We had half of the food at home, what was missing was bought at the store.
Conclusion:
Artificial snow exists. A lot has been written about how you can get it in different sources: the Internet, books. There are many ways to obtain such snow, from simple to complex. We have chosen simple and accessible methods.
2.3. Where can it be used?
— Artificial snow can be used in experimental activities. Carry out all sorts of experiments with him.
— You can play with it, make different shapes, use it as decoration.
3. Experimental work
3.1 What are the different ways to produce artificial snow?
Experience 1
- So, I will show you several ways today.
- Method one: we need half a tube of shaving cream, 4 tablespoons of starch.
Squeeze the cream out of the tube into a bowl and add starch. We need it to be a crumbly mass that can be collected into a lump.
– And to make our snow sparkle, I’ll add a pinch of sparkles.
- How great it is to play with such snow, make snowballs and snowmen!
Experience 2
For this you will need: shaving foam and baking soda 1 cup.
Fill the cup halfway with shaving foam. The bottle should be held vertically (standing). Then gradually add baking soda, about a glass. And mix until our snow becomes crumbly.
Experience 3
For the third method we will need: baking soda and liquid soap. It is better to choose white soap.
— Take less than a third of a glass of liquid soap, pour it into a cup and gradually add 6 tablespoons of soda into the cup, stirring thoroughly, bringing it to a homogeneous, loose mass.
Conclusion:
There are many ways to obtain artificial snow, we have chosen the three simplest methods. Products for this can be found at home and in stores.
Result:
The resulting snow masses resemble the appearance and feel of real snow.
Conclusion: (children)
Artificial snow can be obtained under simple conditions and from simple products.
They can be used to play and decorate New Year's crafts. It doesn't melt. Stores well in a plastic bag at normal temperature. and after drying it holds its shape for some time. Teacher:
With the help of artificial snow you can show the stickiness of snow as a property. Easy to obtain, convenient to use and store.
