New Year

in Russia -

from the history

the origin of the holiday

New Year is one of the Russian calendar holidays, celebrated on the night

from December 31 to January 1 of each year.

But it was not always so…

For a long time, the ancient Slavs celebrated the New Year on March 1. They gave us the tradition of lighting lights on New Year trees. Lighting the fire promised a good harvest.

With the adoption of Christianity, the New Year began to be celebrated on September 1.

Since 1700, by decree of Peter I, the New Year in Russia has been celebrated, as in other European countries, on January 1.

The superstitious people of Russia tried to celebrate the New Year as joyfully and cheerfully as possible, so that next year life would be filled with happiness and prosperity. Mass celebrations, winter fun, feasts, round dances and masquerades have become an indispensable attribute of the New Year holiday.

At the same time, the tradition of decorating Christmas trees, arranging fireworks and New Year's costume carnivals arose.

Our favorite New Year's characters are
Father Frost and Snow Maiden.

Age of
Santa Claus
Where did Santa Claus come from and how old is he?
We think everyone has asked this question at some point. Santa Claus is considered not just a symbol of the New Year, but also one of the most popular fairy-tale characters among children.

The exact age of the old man is not known; it is believed that he is only

100-150 years.

But mentions of him date back to ancient times, when fairy tales and legends were composed about Frost.

He was presented as an evil and harsh owner of forests and fields, who brought blizzards, cold and frost to the earth.

He had many names: some called him
Morozko , some called him Moroz, and some respectfully called him Moroz Ivanovich . They treated him as a kind of idol, the master of winter, so they themselves presented him with gifts so that he would become kinder.

And only much later, when Rus' began to celebrate the New Year in the European style, Father Frost was made a symbol of celebration. His image has undergone changes: his character has become better and now he himself began to give gifts to people.

He comes to visit not only with gifts, but also with his assistant, his granddaughter Snegurochka
.

The Snow Maiden is a character from a folk tale about a girl made of snow who came to life.

The image of the Snow Maiden is a symbol of frozen waters. This is a girl (not a girl) - an eternally young and cheerful pagan Goddess, dressed only in white robes. No other color is allowed in traditional symbolism.

Although, from the middle of the 20th century, blue tones were sometimes used in her clothes. Her headdress is an eight-rayed crown embroidered with silver and pearls.

Father Frost and Snow Maiden live in the city of Veliky Ustyug in a palace made of wood and glass. Their assistants live with them.

What magic can Santa Claus do?

Santa Claus has a magic staff.

Whatever he touches with this staff, everything freezes. And if Santa Claus blows on the river, it will be covered with ice. If Santa Claus waves his sleeve or shakes his mitten, it will snow. Santa Claus makes sure that the winter is correct - snowy and frosty. Sometimes Santa Claus gets tired and falls asleep, and then winter is late - there is no snow for a long time.

In the old days, winter and severe frosts brought a lot of troubles and troubles to people.

Have you ever thought about what the snowman outside your window symbolizes, and who was
the first person in the whole world to think of making this winter beauty?

According to an old legend, around 1493, the sculptor, poet and architect Michelangelo Buonarroti first made a snow figure. Historical data assures that the first written mention of a snowman can be found in one of the books of the 18th century, which tells about a “beautiful snowman” of enormous size.

In Rus', snowmen have been sculpted since ancient times and were respected. People believed in their magical powers. Snowmen were asked to reduce severe frosts. Our ancestors believed that blizzards and snowfalls were controlled by female spirits. That's why they sculpted snow women in their yards.

It was believed that making a snow woman on a full moon would bring misfortune and nightmares. Meeting a snowy figure in the evening was considered a bad sign. Therefore, in the dark, they tried to avoid her. It was only later that snowmen became integral symbols of the winter holidays.

They sculpted a little snowman from freshly fallen snow and whispered their innermost desires to him. It was believed that as soon as the figurine melted, the wish would be taken to heaven and would certainly come true.

In the 19th century, snowmen “became” the good heroes of New Year’s fairy tales, appeared on greeting cards and won the love of children and adults.

By the way, you can honor this handsome snowman
on January 18, when Snowman Day is celebrated.
Be sure to create a winter miracle and make your deepest wish.

history of the holiday

Our story about the New Year began many centuries ago, when, according to old Russian traditions, it was celebrated together with Maslenitsa, in March.

The history of the New Year in Rus' took an unusual shape: the pagan magicians drove away the cold winter in the spring, and then the New Year came. Our presentation in bright and interesting pictures excitingly tells children the stories of the New Year. Click on the picture to download the presentation for free.

A reverent attitude towards the arrival of the New Year accompanies us since childhood. After all, every year, tearing off the last leaf of the calendar, we open a new, unknown New Year with excitement and hope. We expect happy stories, joyful dates and interesting events from him.

The history of the New Year holiday will begin with Christmastide. It begins on the sun’s birthday, at the time of the winter solstice – December 25th. On this day, our ancestors in Rus' worshiped him: they burned fires and baked loaves, asking their deity for warmth and a good harvest. Holy holidays, Holy evenings – that’s what our grandmothers call these days. Children especially look forward to these days, because peace and many holidays come to their homes.

Target:

Form ideas about the New Year holiday.

Tasks:

Enrich ideas about the celebration of the New Year , about the symbols and traditions of the holiday . Create an atmosphere of festive mood.

To deepen children's knowledge about New Year celebrations in our country .

New Year is the most favorite holiday for millions of people from different countries. This is one of those few days of the year when almost the whole world is busy with the same thing: everyone is watching the clock and rejoicing in the new year .

New Year in Russia was not always celebrated on December 31st. This holiday was once celebrated on September 1st. It's now the very first day of school and the beginning of fall. And our ancestors celebrated the New Year on this day, but there were no trees, gifts, or Santa Claus. Where did this holiday come from?

Tsar Peter the Great ordered to celebrate the New Year on January 1st. Since the emperor was a big fan of everything European, the celebration of the New Year became a bright , cheerful annual event in the life of the Russian people, as in Europe. According to Dutch traditions , people had to decorate their houses with pine branches and not remove these decorations until the Nativity of Christ .

On the night from December 31 to January 1, everyone was supposed to relax and have fun. The emperor himself was present at such festivities. He personally fired the first fireworks rocket brought from Europe. However, it wasn't just fireworks that decorated the festive city; noble people had to shoot small cannons and rifles into the air to give grandeur to the celebration

The symbol of the New Year is the Christmas tree . The Christmas tree marks the beginning of a new year and has become a symbol of eternal life, because, unlike other trees, it does not shed its leaves, and is green all year round. The Christmas tree has become a real symbol of a family holiday, children and adults decorate it together, round dances are held around it, poems are read and singing songs.

Santa Claus is a constant character of the New Year holidays , familiar from childhood. But what is known about its origin? Among the ancient Slavs, Father Frost was the lord of cold, snow, and blizzards; he was represented as a short old man with a long beard in a long sheepskin coat and felt boots. Then he was not a kind grandfather, his character was very strict, he was also called Treskun, Karachun, Morozko. In those days, Santa Claus did not so much give gifts as punish, taking naughty children into the forest and freezing them. He gave gifts, of course, but only to the smartest and most obedient, and he could easily punish the mischievous ones with a stick.

over time, his character became kinder, more affectionate, lost his most frightening features (rudeness, tough temper, his stick turned into a magic staff and the small, unkempt creature was replaced by a sweet old man who inspired trust. Now Santa Claus also has a granddaughter - Snegurochka, who helps the old man deliver gifts and tell stories and play with children

The birthplace of Father Frost is the city of Veliky Ustyug, which is located in the northeast of the Vologda region. In a pine forest , not far from the city, there is the estate of Father Frost - this is a wonderful fairy-tale place. It is here that the tower of Father Frost is located, in which there is a throne room and many more magical rooms

Grandfather Frost has his own post office where you can write a letter. You can write to Santa Claus at the address: 162390, Russia, Vologda region, Veliky Ustyug,

About the Old New Year

But the New Year is not over yet. The history of the New Year holiday continues with the Old New Year, which Russians celebrate from January 13 to 14. The history of the New Year according to the old style takes us back to the traditions of our ancestors, for whom it was the same sacrament of time as it is for us now. The celebration of the New Year according to the Gregorian and Julian calendars occurs only in Russia, incredibly surprising Europe, and the presentation introduces these events from the history of the holiday.

In the old days, New Year's celebrations were communal and massive. But over time, it acquired the status of a family and cozy celebration, when in the frosty winter all relatives gather at a beautifully set festive table, communicate and share events and stories from their lives over the past year. Children these days:

  1. rest a lot
  2. rejoice
  3. go to holiday parties
  4. and communicate with parents who are also on Christmas holidays.

The opportunity to be together as a family helps strengthen family bonds and find support from each other.
