Parent meeting for 8th grade on the topic: “Development of self-awareness and adequate self-esteem of a teenager”

How to determine a child's self-esteem

Children under seven years old think in pictures and do not try to evaluate themselves and their friends. Younger schoolchildren are already capable of adequate self-esteem. At this age, it depends on academic performance, behavior, conflicts with teachers and peers, and achievements in extracurricular activities. Kids compare themselves with their classmates, and the task of adults is to help them not become dependent on other people’s successes.

To determine self-esteem, teachers observe younger students and conduct individual conversations with some of them. Child psychologists often use the “talking drawings” method. They ask the child to draw himself and choose any name. Such images can tell a lot about a child’s self-perception, experiences and idols.

Another effective way is to draw a “ladder of success”. The psychologist schematically depicts seven wide steps and suggests placing classmates on them (on the bottom - good children, on the top - bad). Then the specialist asks you to draw yourself there. Placing your figure on the highest or lowest step indicates high or low self-esteem.
